For most of the offseason, everyone assumed the only thing that would prevent Brock Purdy from being the 49ers’ quarterback to start the season was his health. But there was one caveat that Kyle Shanahan gave to Purdy himself directly that would jeopardize his starting spot: Tom Brady.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, Shanahan met with Purdy earlier in the offseason and said the starting spot would be his if the elbow injury he suffered in last year’s NFC title game healed … unless the 49ers could convince Brady to return to his childhood team.
